MillLine: Tungaloy Launches New “Tung-Tri” Shoulder Milling Cutters, Combining Economical Benefits and New Design Technology

1. September 2013 - To improve the performance of shoulder milling processes, the Tungaloy Corporation has now introduced its exciting new Tung-Tri series of indexible cutters. The new Tung-Tri can give end users an economical solution when shoulder milling with innovative 3 cornered insert.
When drawing comparisons between conventional two corner insert design and the new three-cornered Tung-Tri, the Tungaloy innovation has similar cutting edge geometries that have been proven from a performance perspective. However, with three cutting edges on the insert, the tool life, cost benefits and inventory control are drastically improved for the end user.
By adopting an ‘anti-chatter’ flank design and a helical cutting edge, the Tung-Tri series creates a smooth cutting action with impeccable surface finishes and remarkable wall straightness. The ability of the Tung-Tri to deliver such impressive tool life and productivity gains are a result of the new insert geometry that has an optimised flank angle and flank face contributing in reducing chatter even in long overhang applications. This ‘anti-chatter’ design is supported by a cutting edge with a high inclination that provides a smooth cutting action. Furthermore, the insert has inclination which contributes to better surface finishes by moving the swarf away from the cutting zone. Moreover, the triangular design and higher insert clearance combine to give exceptional performance when conducting high ramping operations.
The Tung-Tri is available with a shank type cutter body or with a bore type face mill with pockets that accommodate inserts with three cutting edges to reduce tooling costs and inventory. The benefits of the insert design are further enhanced by the unique cutter body design. For the shank type cutter, the toolholder has a large chip gullet to deliver smooth chip evacuation that also prevents chip packing. The enhanced chip flow reduces the forces upon the inserts and the cutting tool while reducing the load on the machine tool spindle. Furthermore, with a large insert clamping screw with an SS-Fit structure, the large screw thread engagement ensures clamping forces are directed to the interior of the pocket. This development enhances rigidity and maximises the insert life by reducing chatter and vibration.
The Tung-Tri is ideal for shoulder milling, specifically suitable for long overhang applications of steel, cast iron, stainless steel, tool and hardened steels as well as heat resistant alloys and titanium alloys. The Tung-Tri is capable of machining this vast array of materials as the inserts are offered in Tungaloy’s renowned AH120 and a new revolutionary AH3135 grade. The new AH3135 offering from Tungaloy combines the properties required for machining carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. Catering for such a diverse range of material types, the Tung-Tri is suitable for the general machining industries as well as the aerospace, automotive, heavy engineering and machine tool manufacturing sectors.
The JIS/ISO shank type cutter body is available in 25, 32, 40 and 50 mm diameters, while the AISI designated cutter is available in 1”, 1.25”, 1.5” and 2” diameters. The bore type cutter body is also available in JIS/ISO on diameters of 40, 50, 63, 80 and 100 mm, while the AISI designated cutter is available in 2”, 2.5”, 3”, and 4” diameters.
