MillLine: Tungaloy Launches High Performance Slot Milling Cutter “TungSlot” Series

July 2013 - For improving productivity and reducing cycle times and tooling costs when conducting slotting operations, the Tungaloy Corporation has now launched its new range of TungSlot slotting cutters. Capable of cutting slot widths from 6 to 16 mm with cutter bodies developed to accept six corner inserts, the economical new TungSlot is destined to be a major success in the marketplace.

The new TungSlot is ideal for the medium to heavy machining of steel, stainless steel, cast iron and heat resistant alloys. This diverse material application range makes the innovative new TungSlot ideal for the heavy engineering, machine tool, automotive and general machining industry sectors. The ability of the TungSlot to meet such heavy cutting parameters is credit to its excellent chip evacuation in deep slots and the high insert density on the cutter body.

The combination of high performance, six cornered inserts with the TungSlot cutter bodies delivers a cost reduction versus performance ratio that cannot be matched by alternate manufacturers. The TungSlot cutter bodies incorporate an optimally designed gullet that provides smoother chip formation and evacuation to enhance performance under heavy cutting. Furthermore, the cutter bodies are nickel plated to significantly improve wear resistance and eliminate scratching caused by chip. This drastically improves the service life of the cutter body as well as improving performance. From a safety perspective, the cutter bodies are also marked with the direction of rotation for the benefit of the customer.

Available from 6 to 16 mm wide in increments of 2 mm, the cutter bodies are available in a TSW, ASW and ASV type designation with overall diameters from 80 to 200 mm. The various diameter ranges are available with a high density insert pitch that sees 8 inserts on an 80 mm diameter cutter through to 20 inserts on a 200 mm diameter tool.

The corresponding inserts for the TungSlot are available with the TVKX geometry for the ASV type cutter. This series of tangential inserts have a relatively thin width with a chipbreaker that is extremely effective for chip formation and evacuation. The inserts have six cutting edges with three right and three left hand edges in a single insert. This enables each insert to be used in the right and left hand pocket and it also reduces the tooling inventory and associated costs for the customer.

The ability to offer more 'effective' inserts on the cutter body permits higher speed and feed rates than alternate products while delivering significantly enhanced chip removal, surface finishes and tool life.

For the TSW and ASW cutter bodies, Tungaloy has created its exciting WNGU insert geometry. The WNGU inserts offer a large width for extremely stable and rigid cutting under difficult machining conditions. The double-sided insert has a sharp cutting edge with a positive inclination that further reduces the cutting forces and therefore the stress on the machine tool. The performance of this cutting edge is further enhanced with a wiper edge on the insert that promotes efficiency and improves surface finishes.

The TVKX and WNGU insert designations are all available in Tungaloy's market leading AH725, AH130 and AH120 grade compositions to enhance tool life and productivity when machining the various material types.

From a productivity perspective, the new TungSlot is already outperforming its competitors with material removal rates far superior to alternate suppliers. Under test conditions, the TungSlot has reduced the number of required passes with the cutter, it has drastically improved chip evacuation and it has eliminated chatter thus, contributing to achieve better tool life, surface finishes and ultimately higher productivity.
