TurnLine: Tungaloy Launches “DoMiniTurn / External Line” for Small Lathes

25. December 2013 - For turning applications on small size CNC lathes and Swiss type automatic lathes, the Tungaloy Corporation has now introduced the new DoMiniTurn / External Line. The new external turning line offers multiple cutting edges with the additional economical benefit of double sided inserts that deliver reduced tooling costs and inventory requirements.
The innovative new DoMiniTurn / External Line with double sided insert demonstrates low cutting forces equal to conventional single type insert. This is credit to a large rake angle created by well-designed insert seat and sharp cutting edge geometries of inserts. The DoMiniTurn incorporates a highly rigid clamping system that has a dovetail structure to create a high clamping force to eliminate chatter and poor surface finishes. To improve the insert changeover process in small machine tools that are difficult to access, DoMiniTurn introduces not only screw clamping toolholders but also back clamping toolholders that simplifies the insert indexing process. Developed for the turning of low carbon steel, alloy steels and stainless steels, the new DoMiniTurn provides a highly efficient, cost effective and productive turning solution.
To offer end users the most comprehensive turning solution, Tungaloy has made the insert geometries and associated toolholders available with a JTS and TS type insert for general purpose machining of steel. Additionally, the new JSS and SS type inserts are available for stainless steel machining with extremely low cutting forces. JTS and JSS type inserts are designed especially for machining of small parts with high accuracy. The corner radii of these inserts have minus tolerances. This feature is highly effective for the machining of precise parts with assigned radius, such as R < 0.1 mm.
Trigon and Rhombic insert geometries are available with grades that include AH725, GT530 and NS530 for everything from medium to finish machining. The innovative geometry design and insert grade provide exceptional chip control on steels and stainless steels. Furthermore, under test conditions the new Tungaloy DoMiniTurn has proven to improve tool life by over 30% when compared to competitor products. While this delivers economical benefits and tool life consistency, the true benefit arrives from the ability of the DoMiniTurn to offer four or six cutting edges per insert as opposed to two cutting edges with conventional positive type. This significantly reduces tooling costs, the required inventory and the changeover time for inserts.
